Fine CHina is a band from Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

Fine China was formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1997. Soon after, they released their first 2 EP’s and a 7″ on SoCal indie label Velvet Blue Music. After the second EP, the core of the band was set as Rob Withem on vocals and guitars, Thom Walsh on the drums, and Greg Markov on the bass. The three have remained together through now.

The band went on to tour extensively and soon signed to Seattle's Tooth and Nail Records. Their first LP, “When the World Sings” was released in 2000. Recorded by Gene Eugene at the Green Room in Fullerton, California, and produced by Ronnie Martin of Joy Electric, it featured experimentation with a more electronic sound. More touring followed, as well as festival performances (including SXSW in 2001). Hunkering down at the Jam Palace, the band readied 10 new songs, and went into the studio to record their sophomore LP titled “You Make Me Hate Music". With Jason Martin of Starflyer 59 as the producer, the record featured a return the guitar-driven roots of the band. The record received very good reviews, and the band did another SXSW performance and toured as a five piece (with Joshua Block on keys and Joshua Dooley on guitars). Despite critical acclaim, the band was released from their contract with T&N and went on a break.

After a brief hiatus, in 2005 the band recorded their third LP “The Jaws of Life.” Their first record to be tracked locally, it was recorded with Bob Hoag at Flying Blanket Recording in Mesa, Arizona. Released by Chuckie Duff on Phoenix indie label Common Wall Media, the record received wide critical nods, and several TV show placements (including the OC, which featured My Worst Nightmare). Following a 2006 performance at the New Times Best Of festival, Fine China decided to go on an indefinite break.

In December of 2015 "The Jaws of Life" was re-issued on 12″ vinyl with a newly recorded bonus track "Every Nerve Alert". Fine China has always been a guitar-driven, pop band at heart, and the new track did not disappoint. It was met with lots of applause and the vinyl quickly sold out. The band decided to play a reunion show at the Rebel Lounge in Phoenix to commemorate the event.

Now, twelve years after their last album, Fine China is back with a full length recording for Velvet Blue Music, exactly twenty years after their first recordings for the same label! This new batch of songs was recorded in songwriter Rob Withem’s studio over the past year, and was mixed with Bob Hoag, the band’s longtime producer and engineer, at Flying Blanket Recording in Mesa, Arizona. The new full length, entitled “Not Thrilled,” was released on 2/23/18 and contains 11 new new tracks of blissful guitar pop. A 7” with a bonus track titled “You Are Not the Future” was also released by VBM.

The band is playing occasional shows (including a recent streak of opening for The Ocean Blue's "Kings and Queens / Knaves and Thieves" tour), and contemplating what could be fun in the future. We remain grateful for our fans, and all the support we’ve had over the years. THANK YOU!
